58-year-old Joseph Edward Helmka was struck by a vehicle around 3:00 AM last night near the corner of NW 10th and MacArthur.  He was spotted by a passing motorist and was rushed to the hospital but he expired before arriving at the hospital.  Police are asking anyone with information regarding this crash to contact them at 405-235-7300.

The Oklahoma Freewheel has announced their 2013 route with a return to eastern Oklahoma after a couple of years further west. This year will start in Idabel and finish in Joplin, MO after crossing some scenic and a bit hilly terrain. Total mileage is between 458-509 miles depending on the optional routes. The Oklahoma Freewheel has announced the registration fees for this year’s ride which will start at $295 for an adult (from $175 last year) and $195 for riders under 24 (up from $100 for riders under 15 last year). It’s been two years since the Oklahoma cycling community was shocked by two bicycle fatalities in less than 48 hours both involving long time cyclists. One of those incidents involved the hit-and-run killing of Alan Spencer. The driver in that crash has never been identified and police now consider the case a cold one. As the anniversary of the crash approaches, the Spencer family repeats their plea for information in the case and for the driver of the car to come forward. [Read More]

AMBUCS, a nonprofit organization specializing in providing mobility solutions for children and adults with disabilities with transportation options, will be giving away 100 trikes to children and veterans on Saturday morning in downtown Oklahoma City. These bikes called AmTryke’s come available with hand and/or foot cranks to meet the requirements of the riders. The 17th Norman Conquest ride will take place this Saturday staring at 7:30 AM from the J.D. McCarty Center at 2002 E Robinson St in Norman, OK. Fleet Feet Sports in Tulsa is organizing a duathlon this Sunday to honor cyclists Christa Voss and Matthew Edmonds: A duathlon organized by Fleet Feet Sports Tulsa will take place Sunday to remember Christa Voss and Matthew Edmonds, cyclists killed by a drunken driver while riding their bikes on Oklahoma 51 near 161st West Avenue on June 9, 2009. The race benefits the Edmonds & Voss Memorial Fund, which has supported the families of Voss and Edmonds as well as benefiting drunken driving prevention and the Tulsa Zoo fund, among other causes, according to event coordinator Kate Critchfield.
