Day 77: Sea of Bikes

So today was a frantically busy but productive day. I spent today assembling a seemingly endless number of children’s bicycles for the Salvation Army as part of their Bucks for Bikes program which acquires brand new bicycles for needy children on Christmas. It was a great event and I got to meet some more members from OBS whom I hadn’t already met.

Oklahoman Reports on Jones Area Cycling

The Oklahoman has written a nice article about the increased levels of cycling in eastern Oklahoma County which includes some great quotes from Roger Welch, president of OBS and Mike Flenniken, president of the Oklahoma Bicycle Coalition: Between the forests and country homes of eastern Oklahoma County, the spandex and carbon fiber associated with cycling are an increasingly common sight. “Any evening after five 5 o’clock, you’re going to find some bikers coming through here,” Jones Mayor Ray Poland said. OKC Thunder Provides 125 Bicycles to Area Kids

The Oklahoman has a nice story about the bicycle giveaway provided by the Thunder on Christmas night: On a Christmas night most folks left the arena buzzing about the Thunder’s 114-106 victory over the Nuggets and Kevin Durant’s 44 points, there were more than a hundred kids from the Oklahoma City Boys and Girls Club who walked out of the building with bigger memories. Lasting memories. Lifelong memories. They received tickets as part of the Thunder’s “Tickets for Kids” program, and they thought that was their big present. [Read More]

Buck$ 4 Bikes is a program organized by The Salvation Army and the Oklahoma Bicycle Society, acquires and builds new bicycles for kids throughout the area.

OBS Streak on September 12th

It’s that time again, OBS Streak time. It’s been a long time since I’ve ridden this one, but it remains one of the staples of the OKC cycling community. This year the ride will be held on September 12th at 7:30 AM at Mitch Park in Edmond. There will be 25 mile, 40 mile and 100K routes along with a Family Fun Ride within the park. Registration is $20 ($25 if recieved after 8/30/2010) for each adult and $10 for children. [Read More]
