McKinney Falls State Park

Urban RV camping can be a disappointing experience. Crowded sites, parking lot aesthetics, bright lighting, and really, all of the things that can ruin a sense of home. Thankfully, when visiting Austin, you have another option with McKinney Falls State Park. Only ten miles from downtown Austin, this relatively spacious park makes for a perfect home base when visiting the city of weird. The spots are absolutely enormous with wooded separation between each site and plenty of land to spread out and enjoy the evenings. [Read More]

Village Creek State Park

Village Creek State Park
Campsite at Villiage Creek State Park We spent a week at this delightful small park on the outskirts of Beaumont, Texas in the suburb of Lumberton. While much of the park was severely damaged by recent flooding, great steps have been made in restoring the park and all of the electric/water spots are open. However, the walk-in tent spots are currently closed. The spots that are available are a little closer together than you will find in most state parks, but some are separated by thick growth and trees that provide a good deal of privacy. [Read More]

On Being Stationary

On Being Stationary
After the somewhat frantic out and back travel we did for the first three months in the Airstream, we were ready for a break. While we were enjoying the sights, having to head out to a location for only a week or two before heading back to Oklahoma was getting a little tiring. Since we had the holidays coming up plus the kids’ birthdays, we decided to stop traveling for the year in the middle of October. [Read More]

Upper Teton View

Upper Teton View
This is the sort of spot you dream about when you start thinking about RV travel. Admittedly, it’s not a secret, but with plenty of room for everyone, this is a spot not to be missed. And even though you won’t be alone, compared to many of the other campgrounds in the Grand Teton/Yellowstone area, you will feel like you are truely in wilderness. Access is fairly straightforward for most sized rigs, though there are a couple of blind turns and a few spots where two rigs passing would be difficult. [Read More]

Teton Valley RV Park

Teton Valley RV Park
Affordable RV camping in the Yellowstone/Grand Teton area is hard to come by. We were happy therefore to find a more affordable option just across the Tetons from Jackson, WY in Victor, ID at the Teton Valley RV Park. The regular full service spots are pretty close together and at between $51-$62 a night were a bit pricy for what you get. However, they have several grass-lined water and electricity only sites that are really nicely spaced with a nice view over the fields towards the mountains. [Read More]

Gunnison Lakeside RV Park & Cabins

Gunnison Lakeside RV Park & Cabins
About 10 miles outside of Gunnison, Colorado, is Gunnison Lake RV Park and Cabins. It’s conveniently location just across the highway from the Blue Mesa reservoir. It’s located on a somewhat steep slope but it is easy to navigate. However, because of the layout of the park, doesn’t give many trailers a view of the reservoir. Sites are gravel but are pretty level. Ours only required one leveling block to get perfectly level. [Read More]

North Bank Campground

North Bank Campground
This pretty Forest Service campground is just up the road from the small resort town of Almont, Colorado. The road has some large potholes going in, but is easily navigable by any vehicle if you go slow. Located deep in the Taylor River canyon, the sites are nicely spaced, surrounded by tall pine trees and right on the river bank. It’s technically close to the highway, but because it’s on the other side of the river, you hardly notice it due to the wonderful river soundtrack. [Read More]

Week 3: A Return to Normalcy?

Week 3: A Return to Normalcy?
So, my three weeks off is coming to an end. It’s been an amazing whirlwind of activity that has moved us closer to our dream of the open road than the last few months combined. This week was a slow return towards normalcy. I personally spent most of the week doing client work, cleaning email and getting business work taken care of after the craziness of the last two weeks. Kind of nice to write some code again. [Read More]

It Starts with a First Step

It Starts with a First Step
It’s been a frustrating few weeks for me on the home liquidation front. Partially, I felt stuck in a rut of analysis paralysis; constantly planning and no action. However, mostly it just not finding time to get anything done. Between my day job, my side work on Fore & Aft Design and just the stuff that we have to do to keep our lives afloat, there just wasn’t enough hours in the day. [Read More]

A New Dream

A New Dream
For me, it started with a dream of boats and wide open spaces. While growing up in Oklahoma City can’t be described as exactly living in a concrete jungle, it also wasn’t the exactly the great wide open either. I then spent several years in Chicago, which really was the concrete jungle before returning once again to Oklahoma. And yet, my favorite memories are of traveling through wide open vistas, whether family camping trips through Big Bend, TX, backpacking in New Mexico or any number of bicycle trips. [Read More]
