Oklahoman Takes Epic Trip to Alaska

Another nice bicycling story from the Oklahoman, this time about an OSU student who recently completed a 4,000 mile bicycle trip to Alaska: The weather had been rainy, cold and windy for weeks when Curtis Moss reached a point where he didn’t care and he was ready to stop. Moss, a junior at Oklahoma State University, had already cycled more than 3,000 miles. He got an offer 430 miles up the road that he couldn’t possibly refuse. [Read More]

Accident Victim Recovers to Ride Again

Yeah, it’s another accident story, but this one has a happy ending. This is a nice story about Russell Hinckley who was injured last year but has made a nice recovery and was able to ride Freewheel this year: An Edmond man injured in a car-bicycle accident near Lake Hefner last year was back on the road again in a weeklong bicycle ride across the state in June. via Edmond man recovers from car-bicycle accident to ride across the state | NewsOK. Another Cycling Fatality

I’m really getting tired and upset reporting on cyclists deaths in Oklahoma. This is purely anecdotal, but I don’t remember this many fatal accidents in recent memory. Last night, a man was killed near Woodward while riding at night. The story doesn’t give many details, but implies that the man was riding without proper lighting. However, I’m not generally inclined to trust police descriptions of bicycle accidents. You can read the limited details here: Okla man killed while riding bike on highway - News9. [Read More]

Tips for Happy Riding

Just came across this great list of tips for a happy cyclist. Here are a few of my favorites, but there are some great gems in there: Don’t ride in shoes you can’t walk through an antique shop in. . . . Never blame your bike or your health or anything else if you’re the last one up the hill or in to the rest stop. . . . If you pass another rider going up a hill, say more than “Hi,” but if it’s a woman and you aren’t, don’t assume she wants to chit-chat. [Read More]

Provably False

Provably False

I understand the gist of this sign, but the sentiment is certainly untrue. Just one of those funny things you see on a bike ride.

Chicago Vacation Photos

It’s been about two years since I had been in Chicago and it was great to see the old town again. This time there was no specific event to attend, so Grace and I lived it up as a couple of true tourists doing all those things I never really did when I lived there, such as the boat tours, Navy Pier and Second City. It was a wonderful trip with wonderful company . Smurfette is Dead Long Live ???

Well, Smurfette isn’t really dead, but as of today she’s no longer my sole bicycle. As of today, I’ve got this beautiful new Surly Long Haul Trucker in my garage. She’s the same color but a much different personality which puts me in a quandary as to what to name her. Smurfette II just doesn’t seem right . . . Any ideas? I’ll buy a drink for the person with the best idea. Cyclist Killed in Apparent Hit-and-Run Crash

So, following up on the request for information I posted earlier, it appears the cyclist in question was involved in an apparent hit and run crash. About 8:15 a.m., a passer-by reported a bicyclist in a ditch in the 12600 block of N Midwest Boulevard, just north of NE 122, Patty said. The bicyclist, identified only as a white male, was pronounced dead at the scene, she said. “This appears to be a hit-and-run,” Patty said. [Read More]
